Today in Olympia, the Northwest Progressive Institute (NPI) teamed up with Attorney General Bob Ferguson, Representative Vandana Slatter, Senator Manka Dhingra, and allies like Planned Parenthood Alliance Advocates to release new polling showing that 76% of likely 2024 Washington State voters support the proposed My Health, My Data Act, with 70% strongly supportive, 6% somewhat supportive, 6% somewhat opposed, 11% strongly opposed, and 7% not sure.
The finding is part of NPI's winter 2023 survey of the Washington State electorate, which looked at a wide array of issues and explored hypothetical fields for upcoming statewide elections.
Conducted from March 7th-8th, 2023 for NPI by Public Policy Polling of North Carolina, a Democratic-aligned firm, the survey asked:
Do you strongly support, somewhat support, somewhat oppose, or strongly oppose blocking health tracking apps and advertisers from collecting and selling Washingtonians’ health data without their consent, barring location-specific targeting of people who visit reproductive and gender affirming healthcare facilities, and requiring companies to maintain and publish a privacy policy for people’s health data?
Answers were as follows:
- Support: 76%
- Strongly support: 70%
- Somewhat support: 6%
- Oppose: 17%
- Somewhat oppose: 6%
- Strongly oppose: 11%
- Not sure: 7%
"This is one of the most enthusiastic responses we've ever seen to a question about proposed legislation at any level, state or federal," said Northwest Progressive Institute founder and executive director Andrew Villeneuve. "In the ten year history of NPI's statewide research, there have been only a few times when we've seen support for a bill land above seventy-five percent of likely voters. This is one of those times. These numbers are about as lopsided as it gets."
"Our finding shows that privacy is important to Washingtonians of all party affiliations and ideological orientations. Democrats, Republicans, and independents agree: Our private health data should be private, and the law should protect it. The proposed My Health, My Data Act is sensible, necessary, and sorely needed. NPI urges the Senate to pass House Bill 1155 before next week's opposite house policy bill cut-off."
